Emergency Management Tasman – Kina

Our beautiful rural-coastal Tasman–Kina community, with around 550 households, is vulnerable to natural hazards. Our emergency plan helps us be self-reliant and resilient when disaster strikes — because in a major event, first responders may not reach us for days.

Why We Plan

  • Support our community’s ability to look after itself during emergencies.

  • Strengthen social connections for mutual help.

  • Reduce reliance on emergency services.

Our Main Hazards

  • Earthquake – major damage, road closures, isolation, risk of injury or to life.

  • Tsunami – damage to low-lying areas, risk to life, blocked roads.

  • Severe weather/flooding – property damage, slips, isolation.

  • Rural fire – fast spread, destruction of property, injury risk.

  • Landslides, pandemic – potential but less frequent risks.

  • Tasman Motor Camp, 55 Aporo Road – only to be used as a safe area if a large tsunami (>2m) is predicted

How To Stay Informed

During an Emergency

  • Call 111 if life or significant property is at risk.

  • Shelter in place if safe to do so.

  • Follow the Community Emergency Preparedness Plan.

  • If telecommunications fail, check noticeboards at key locations (e.g. Tasman Store, schools, CD Centre).
